Downstairs in our restaurant we serve dinner Wednesday through Sunday, and offer contemporary American cuisine. The large, open setting has a platform at the front end — once the Judge’s bench, in Village Hall days — that makes a nice dais or dance floor. The antique oak bar once resided in the Astor Hotel in New York City, and we still make good use of the old village safe, now a home for supplies behind the bar.
Hudson House of Nyack serves rich food and history
After a disgruntled fireman attempted to torch the place in the 1900s, the building became exclusively the Village Hall, hosting the town’s police department, water department, civil court, and even a few jail cells. This remained until the 1970s, when a pair of brothers opened a luncheonette in the recently emptied space. The second floor of the Hudson House creates a private setting for medium-to-large gatherings.

Windows overlook Main Street on the Judge’s end, and there are separate rest rooms for your guests’ convenience. Though Nyack is known for its wide selection of trendy bars and restaurants, there’s few spots with as rich a history, menu, and décor as the Hudson House. Take, for example, his festive spring vegetable salad, a miniature still life of young leeks, two-inch carrots, bright green peas and rosy radishes tied together with a few brush strokes of rich tarragon dressing. Or the quaintly titled “Hen Egg,” a deceptively simple tableau of smoked ricotta, scarlet-tipped lolla rossa lettuce, green and white asparagus, roasted wild mushrooms and a plump, quivering soft egg — bound with a smear of mayonnaise. Built in the 1800s, conflicting reports list 1881 or 1840 as the Main Street building’s opening year. Its upstairs originally served as the Village Hall, while a firehouse functioned on the downstairs floor.
